What do you use salsa verde for?

Anything you would use regular salsa for! Salsa verde has a bright fresh taste that can be added to tacos, burritos, quesadillas or any Mexican dish!

You it as a topping, garnish or main ingredient.

  • 16 oz tomatillo salsa verde
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice (Juice of one lime)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Can I use regular salsa instead of salsa verde?

Of course. You will get a different flavor than the intended flavor with salsa verde. Salsa verde tends to be a bit more mild than red salsas.
 
You can easily use your favorite red salsa for a slow cooker salsa chicken. 
 

Why is it called salsa verde?

Verde is translated to green in english. Salsa verde is made with tomatillos as a base instead of red tomatoes. Tomatillos are a green tomato in color with a slightly more acidic and fresh taste than red tomatoes.
 
This is why they call it salsa verde, the green tomatoes makes green salsa. Tomatillos give a unique brightness to the salsa that is amazing!

What kind of meat can I use?

Any cut of chicken will work. I recommend using chicken breasts for this recipe. But you could use chicken thighs or legs. Be sure to use skinless chicken. Bone-in will work too but is optional.

Ingredients

  • 2 lb chicken breasts
  • 16 oz tomatillo salsa verde heat choice of preference
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice (Juice of one lime)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients into slow cooker and stir.
  • Cook on low 4 hours or high 2 hours.
  • Shred chicken breasts and stir back into sauce in slow cooker.
  • Serve in tortillas, over rice, cauliflower rice or on top of chips!
  • Optional: Garnish with your favorite taco toppings!

Freezer Directions:

  • Label Freezer bag with recipe name, cooking from frozen directions and expiration date (todays date plus three months).
  • Add all ingredients to labeled gallon freezer bag.
  • Store in freezer for up to three months.

Cooking from Frozen Directions:

  • Thaw overnight in fridge or in the morning in some warm water (meal may not be 100% thawed but that is ok).
  • Add freezer bag contents into slow cooker.
  • Cook on low 4 hours, 4-5 hours if frozen.
  • Shred chicken breasts and stir into sauce in slow cooker.
  • Serve in tortillas, over rice, cauliflower rice or on top of chips!
  • Optional: Garnish with your favorite taco toppings!

Notes

  • May top with favorite taco toppings! (cheese, guacomole, salsa, etc…)
  • Make it pretty: Garnish with fresh cilantro and a lime wedge.

  1. Add the chicken to the slow cooker in one single layer. Sprinkle the salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and cumin evenly over the chicken. Pour the jar of salsa on top of the chicken, making sure it s all covered. Cook on low for 4-5 hours. With 30-60 minute f2 s left of cooking time, remove the lid and using two forks, shred the chicken. It will seem like there s a lot of liquid, but once all the chicken is shredded it will absorb most of the liquid. Continue to cook and keep warm until ready to serve. Add to tacos, salads, or serve on top of rice!
