  • Slow Cooker or Crockpot


  • 14.5 oz can black beans
  • 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes
  • 4 cups broth of preference
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 3 oz can tomato paste
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 large yellow onion chopped
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4.5 oz diced green chilies


  • Add all ingredients into slow cooker and stir.
  • Cook on low 3-4 hours.
  • Stir and serve!

Freezer Directions:

  • Label Freezer bag with recipe name, cooking from frozen directions and expiration date (todays date plus three months).
  • Add all ingredients to labeled gallon freezer bag.
  • Store in freezer for up to three months.

Cooking from Frozen Directions:

  • Thaw overnight in fridge or in the morning in some warm water (meal may not be 100% thawed but that is ok).
  • Add freezer bag contents into slow cooker.
  • Cook on low 3-4 hours.
  • Stir and serve!


  • Optional: Garnish with tortilla chips (of dietary preference), cheese and fresh clantro.
  • Make it pretty with a fresh lime wedge on the side!
  • If you do not want a spicy soup omit the green chilies. Still delicious just no kick.

My kids are not able to handle a-lot of spice so I adjust this recipe if I am serving to kids. If your kids are super sensitive to spice then I would omit the green chilies so the whole family can enjoy together. 

Add in 1-2 tbsp tapioca starch mixed with 1-2 tbsp water to make a slurry and then add to the soup and cook on low in slow cooker for an additional 30 minutes to thicken. (you can also use cornstarch or arrowroot powder if that’s what you have on hand)
