Popular Substitutions and Additions

Substitutions:

  1. Beef Chuck Substitute: Chicken Thighs – Swap the beef chuck for boneless, skinless chicken thighs for a lighter but still flavorful option.
  2. Paprika Substitute: Smoked Paprika – Replace regular paprika with smoked paprika to add a deeper, smoky flavor to your goulash. This variation can enhance the dish’s complexity without deviating too far from the traditional recipe.
  3. Caraway Seeds Substitute: Fennel Seeds – Use fennel seeds instead of caraway seeds to provide a slightly different aromatic profile.

Additions:

  1. Bell Peppers – Add diced bell peppers to the goulash for extra color and sweetness. Bell peppers pair well with the other vegetables and add nutritional value.
  2. Green Beans – Include fresh or frozen green beans for additional texture and a nutritional boost. Green beans add a crispness that contrasts nicely with the tender meat and vegetables.
  3. Mushrooms – Incorporate sliced mushrooms to add umami and enhance the savory flavors of the goulash. Mushrooms absorb the flavors of the broth and spices, enriching the overall taste.

By making these substitutions and additions, you can customize your Hungarian Goulash to suit different tastes and dietary preferences while ensuring that the dish remains freezer-friendly.

Can I Freeze Hungarian Goulash: Perfect Freezer Meal For Busy Nights?

Yes, We have designed this recipe to be a freezer recipe, so we recommend preparing this recipe as a Raw freezer meal, which simply means to prepare the recipe in a gallon freezer bag, then freeze, and cook fresh when you need it.

To do this, just put all ingredients into a gallon freezer bag, hold off on adding the day of ingredients until cooking time.

You are also able to freeze leftovers if your fridge time is close to expiring. Make sure the Goulash is cooled, and stored in a freezer safe bag/container for best freezer storage practices.

If using the microwave, make sure to reheat in short bursts of 30-60 seconds, stirring between each interval until heated through.
