Substitutions:

  1. Ground Beef for Ground Turkey – Substitute the 2 lb ground beef with 2 lb ground turkey for a leaner option.
  2. Eggplant for Zucchini – Replace the 1 eggplant with 2-3 medium zucchinis. Slice and cook them similarly to eggplant.
  3. Crushed Tomatoes for Diced Tomatoes – Use 1 (14.5 oz) can of diced tomatoes instead of crushed tomatoes.

Additions:

  1. Frozen Spinach – Add 1 cup of thawed and drained frozen spinach to the meat sauce for extra nutrients and flavor. Spinach pairs well with the spices in Moussaka
  2. Red Bell Pepper – Dice and sauté 1 red bell pepper along with the onion.
  3. Cheese Layer – Add 1 cup of shredded mozzarella or Parmesan cheese between the meat and béchamel layers. Cheese freezes well and adds a deliciously rich and gooey texture when the Moussaka is baked.
