Popular Substitutions and Additions

Substitutions:

  • Pork Shoulder or Pork Butt: If you prefer a leaner option, you can substitute the pork shoulder or pork butt with pork loin. While it may not be as fatty, it will still be flavorful when slow-cooked.
  • Gala Apples: Instead of Gala apples, you can use Granny Smith apples for a slightly tart contrast to the sweetness of the BBQ sauce. Fuji apples can also work well, offering a crisp and sweet flavor.
  • BBQ Sauce: For a different flavor profile, you can substitute the BBQ sauce with a homemade honey mustard sauce. Mix together 1/2 cup honey, 1/4 cup Dijon mustard, 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Adjust the proportions to suit your taste.

Additions:

  • Sautéed Onions: Sautéed onions can add a savory and aromatic dimension to your pulled pork. Sauté them until caramelized and mix them into the pulled pork before serving.
  • Smoked Paprika: To enhance the smoky flavor, consider adding a dash of smoked paprika to the BBQ sauce or as a seasoning for the pork before slow-cooking. It’ll intensify the smokiness without making it overly spicy.
  • Pickled Jalapeños: For a touch of heat and tanginess, add some pickled jalapeños to your pulled pork. These little peppers can provide a delightful contrast to the sweetness of the apples and BBQ sauce. Adjust the amount based on your heat preference.

These substitutions and additions offer a variety of flavors and textures to customize your Apple BBQ Pulled Pork to your liking while maintaining the convenience of a freezer meal. Enjoy experimenting with these options!

How to reheat the Best Apple BBQ Pulled Pork?

When reheating leftover Apple BBQ Pulled Pork, you have two convenient options: the microwave and the stove top.

Microwave Method: Start by transferring the desired portion of pulled pork into a microwave-safe container. To prevent dryness, consider adding a small amount of water or broth to the container before covering it. This extra moisture helps maintain the juiciness of the pork during reheating. Microwave the pulled pork on medium heat in 30-second increments. Be sure to stir or flip the pork between each interval to ensure even heating. This method is quick and convenient, making it an excellent choice for busy occasions when you need a speedy meal.

Stove Top Method: On the other hand, the stove top method is ideal if you want to maintain the original taste and texture of your Apple BBQ Pulled Pork. Begin by adding a bit of oil or water to a skillet or frying pan and heating it over medium-low heat. Once the liquid is hot, add the leftover pulled pork to the pan. Stir-fry it gently, ensuring it’s evenly heated throughout. To prevent the pork from drying out, you can add a splash of broth or water to the pan and cover it with a lid while periodically stirring. This method allows for better control over the reheating process, preserving the meat’s tenderness and flavors.

Both methods can effectively reheat your leftover Apple BBQ Pulled Pork, so you can choose the one that best fits your convenience and preference.

How long should you cook if it’s not frozen but bread?

    • Hannah Stewart says:

Hey Kristin, same amount of time, but check the pork on the earlier side of the timing!

  2. Linda says:

What is the purpose of the aluminum balls?

    • Hannah Stewart says:

Pork can be an extremely fatty cut of meat, so the aluminum balls lift the meat up a bit to allow some of the drippings to fall below the pork.
